I had the honor of attending the snow moon poetry night that was hosted by the children's school at Stephens College. I want to start by saying that every single child did an amazing job and I am super amazed by their memory of everything. I noticed that each grade had their own poem that they were reciting as well as individuals and as a group. I noticed the huge smile on the kids faces as they were so proud and so excited to perform what they had learned, I even saw some kiddos adding movements into the poem, really digging deep. Hearing this made me ask myself “could this be integrated arts”? And my answer would just be simply yes. I believe poetry is a form of art, because even though you are not physically painting a picture and are drawing a picture with your words and with your tone of voice. Everything that makes a poem symbolizes art, whether that be the rhythm, the countless number of words, how it’s written or the way it is being represented. These are all aspects of what makes up a poem. It doesn’t have to be long like a novel, it can be short and sweet. It can be what you see, hear, smell, taste or feel. Poetry is the five senses that make us feel what we thought we couldn’t and end up wanting more of that deep, internal thought that keeps us sane. A community event is very important because it gives the performer a chance to broadcast their art to others. Poetry gives the blind, sight and the deaf the ability to hear. It is the common language that brings America and the countries overseas together, all in one moment, one heart, one voice. So yes, poetry is art, and it should be expressed! Let our words be heard and thoughts be felt because words are really the only thing that can either bring us together or tear us apart.
My Poem: Sing Child Sing
As I watch the kids sing
My heart begins to ring
The church filled with bells
And smiles that swelled.
Word for word, line by line
The children recited right on time.
The glow in their faces,
Oh so proud.
Sing Child Sing
And again and again, my heart begins to ring.
Sing Child Sing.
The studio habit of mind that I would use for this portion is express and also understanding the arts world, because when making this blog I thought about the expression on the kiddos faces along with the emotion it was giving me. I also felt it gave me more insight into the art world. As I continue on through this process, art becomes more and more clear to me. Art is like a metaphor, a simile, and a type of verse, especially when it comes to poetry. It can be expressed in many ways that I knew existed. As the meaning of art continues to grow I am, I furthermore get excited of the new element of surprises it brings.
