I never would have thought that creating a dance could be so difficult and all of the elements that it comes with. I was in a group of three and we had to come up with a theme, music, and a storyline to go with it. We wanted to be dramatic with our performance so we were able to come up with music almost right away and a theme. Our storyline came from one of my classmates' books that she read to her kinder class that afternoon. It was about a little girl who was taking piano lessons with her piano instructor and then after her piano class was over, she was on her journey home although her dad left her and he was nowhere to be found. So, while in the midst of the little girl searching for her father there is also a blizzard that is happening so things look all unclear. After a long journey through the blizzard she finally finds her dad and the rest is history. This was a very short story but I believe the way me and my classmates were really able to come up with a performance and really sell it, it made it that much more dramatic and pleasing to watch. There were so many different elements that were happening like; we were able to have a real piano (which just so happen that one of us knew how to actually play it), someone playing the piano teacher and the lost father (at the same time), and cotton balls to represent the blizzard that was taken place. We were really able to set the scene. I have always loved watching the Les Twins, I believe I originally heard about them long long ago before they actually became a huge deal. They just put so much energy and expression into their dance and that is what makes what they do art. Their dance style pushes against boundaries because I feel that it's almost too realistic. For example, I believe that their dancing often tells a story of real life events that do happen in the world or even relationships (based on the hip hop dance we saw in class) even though it could all be made up. It pushes in a good and respectable way. It's funny, it's emotional, it's eye-catching. I believe that trying to integrate hip hop dance into the classroom can be something that is very difficult but when figured out, successful. I believe that hip hop is a style of dance and art that is very expressive and it can offer you that allowance to break through barriers that you possibly did not know that you even had. As far as implementing it in the classroom for younger students, I believe it is just something fun for the kiddos to do to possibly make them more confident through dance. Because most of the time the kiddos are just going to joke around but at the same time they are having fun while doing so and that can break that barrier of shyness and build the confidence that they need. The studio habit of mind that I used was to persist and engage because it was all about music and expressing and engaging yourself through music. After watching the engagement video from “new habits” it taught me how important it is to ensure that the student finds something that interest them that way they can engage in the activity and get something out of it.
